I don't know if it's an impact, but L's death in DN, made me make a break from the anime, because I didn't feel like watching it when my favourite character was gone, especially, since I'm not really this title's fan, and just liked it because of him ;/.
As for impact like making me cry, then one I can remember right away (since I remembered L only after reading 1st post ;P) would be Takuto's death in Full Moon, I just thought today about that anime, so I can recall right away, tho there are probably few more such cases ;x.

I heard beforehand about the End of Clannad AS and immediately stopped watching the Show. I did not want to see this.
Pandora Hearts was hard too, 'cause all my dear characters started to die one after another at some Point.
Also the death of that little Boy from Tokyo Magnitude 8.0 :(
I don't have a solution but I admire the problem

Gundam 00, episode 23

Started my curse of having favorite characters that end up dead or worse by the end of a series. Definitely shook me the most given that ultimately yeah it was his own fault for charging in in his condition.

I would say it was Doraemon since it is my first manga I have read and was so amazed with the cool items Doraemon have.
As for anime, it was Card Captor Sakura (started ways after doraemon), I was crazy about this anime, especially the art.

I think it would have to be back when I was more impressionable, Chrono Crusade's last episode absolutely ruined me.

Clannad and Air. Key made me cry so much, they really know how to deliver that emotional punch to the gut.

I'd have to agree with a lot of you and pick Clannad After Story. Even though you sort of new what was going to happen, it was painful.
